The big brudda
is remembered
in bronze

IF you're a fan of "Iz" as late singer Israel Kamaka-wiwo'ole was known professionally, you'll want to note that Jan-Michelle Sawyer has created a huge bronze statue of the former member of the Makaha Sons of Niihau, and fittingly, it'll be unveiled and go on display in front of the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center on Farrington Highway on Sept. 20. The singer's widow, Marlene, will be there and any number of local musicians are anticipated to attend the ceremony, which is free. The sculptor, who divides her time between Hawaii and California, did a bronze bust of the late Gabby Pahinui, which is installed at Waikiki Shell ...

A TYPO in yesterday's column had former Miss Hawaii Billie Takaki with the last name of "Tack," a tacky move on my part ... I also located D.J. Richie Walker's radio station, ICRT, in not just the wrong city (Hong Kong) but in the wrong country! It's located in Taipei, Taiwan. Walker will be doing his radio show from Hawaii Aug. 17 through 21, broadcasting from the Beachside Grill overlooking the Moana's Banyan Court. His show reaches from three to five million listeners daily ...

Liquid-ity

IT was quite a sight, seeing to many folks in their best aloha shirts, board-shorts and "slippahs" for the party held after a sneak preview of "Step Into Liquid" at Duke's Waikiki. There were many beachboys in attendance at the showing of the 88-minute surf documentary by Dana Brown including Dave Kalama, Rabbit Kekai, Buffalo and Brian Keaulana, Randy Rarick, Clyde Aikau, George Downing and Joey Cabell. The documentary hits the screen for the public tomorrow at the Wallace Art House at Restaurant Row ... Alzheimer's Association board member Candy Aluli registered a team to play in the organization's Sam Choy Big Man golf tourney Aug. 28 at Pearl Country Club. She won't be playing, however -- she's sending a ringer, hubby Nane Aluli ...

NOW appearing together on TV is the father and son showbiz team of Kimo Kahoano and son Ikaika. No, they're not a singing duet -- not yet, anyway -- but are appearing as spokespeople for the National Lung Screening Trials in Hawaii ... Just when you thought puka shells were tres passe, they've achieved a new popularity in chic San Francisco, of all places. You can thank former Waipahu High pitcher Jerome Williams for that. The 21-year-old always wears a puka shell necklace when he pitches for the Giants as a tribute to his mother, who gave it to him before dying of cancer. Now, when Williams pitches, as he did yesterday, puka shell necklaces are sold for $10 with proceeds going to the Cancer Society to help fight the disease which claimed his mom ...

Soothing the sole

THE folks at Mandara Spa at the Hilton Hawaiian Village recently lifted the spirits and soothed the soles of Honolulu Marathon runners-in-training by partnering with Nike Town and treating 10 lucky runners with complimentary footbaths. At a recent running clinic, Mandara provided footbaths to the first five runners to cross the finish line as well as five others chosen in a drawing. Others craving the treatment must pay ...
