Hilton sues spa
contractors over
Kalia Tower mold

Hilton Hawaiian Village is seeking damages caused by what it alleges to be construction and other defects in the commercial space of its luxury Kalia Tower, which has been shut down for a year because of mold infestation.

The hotel and its parent company, Hilton Hotels Corp., filed suit yesterday in Circuit Court against those involved in the planning, design and construction of the air conditioning systems in the spa commercial space. This is the second complaint filed in the last four months regarding the mold infestation at Waikiki's largest hotel.

Defendants named in the suit include architectural design firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, Inc.; mechanical and engineering consultant Cedric D.O. Chong & Associates Inc.; Kevin Y.F. Chong dba HVAC Hawaii; Dorvin D. Leis Co. Inc; and Hawaii Instrumentation & Controls Inc.

The complaint alleges that in its investigation of the causes of the mold growth in the spa commercial space, Hilton discovered "numerous material defects in the design and construction" which have contributed to excessive humidity, causing mold growth.

The spa commercial space consists of a wellness center, spa and fitness center on the third and fourth floor of Kalia Tower.
