It's National Farmers Week and to celebrate, Fort Street Promenade -- formerly known as Fort Street Mall -- is launching its Open Market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

The event, that will take place every Tuesday and Wednesday, brings produce from the farm to workers in the heart of town for quick lunch-time shopping expeditions.

Shoppers will find 50 to 60 varieties of fresh produce including such staples as papaya and bananas, with more exotic selections such as dragon fruit and Korean and golden melons. There will also be fresh-caught fish, fresh-baked goods, cut flowers and potted orchids as well as Polynesian crafts and bead art jewelry.

Daisy and Ken Kamiya of Kens Produce bring 10 years of farmers' market experience in organizing the event. Bulk orders for parties and special events can also be handled by talking to Daisy on site.

The open market will be located near Wilcox Park on the corner of Fort and King streets.

The event is sponsored by the Fort Street Promenade's Business Improvement District. B.I.D., comprising owners of more than 25 office buildings along the promenade, was created last November to help bring a sense of culture and vitality to the area.
