Rainbows sign Mid-Pacific shortstop
Hawaii Rainbow baseball coach Mike Trapasso announced the signing of infielder Troy Hanzawa to a national letter of intent for the coming season yesterday.
Hanzawa, from Mid-Pacific Institute, played shortstop for the Owls and was a second-team Interscholastic League of Honolulu selection. He has been the Hawaii Island Movers shortstop this summer.
"We're happy to have Troy," said Trapasso. "He gives us tremendous defense and versatility for our infield."
Trapasso also said that The Citadel had replaced Oklahoma State in the 2004 Rainbow Easter Tournament.
Wong, Metzger fall in Austria final
Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong lost to the Brazilian duo of Benjamin Insfran and Marcio Henrique Araujo in the championship match of the A1 Klagenfurt Grand Slam on Sunday in Klagenfurt, Austria.
The Brazilians won the their second title of the Swatch-FIVB World Tour with a 22-20, 21-17 victory over Metzger and Wong.
The tour continues with the Mallorca Open, which begins on Sept. 3.
State Farm Classic tickets go on sale today
Tickets for the State Farm Women's Volleyball Classic presented by NACWAA are available to the public starting today.
The tournament featuring Hawaii, Kansas State, Florida and defending national champion USC will be held Aug. 22-23 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Tickets will be sold as a package. Tickets for lower level seats are $30. Adult upper level tickets are $24. Senior citizen upper level tickets are $18. Upper level tickets for students (ages 4-18) are $12. Individual match tickets go on sale Aug. 22.
Tickets can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center, the Aloha Stadium box office and the UH Campus Center. They can also be purchased over the phone at 944-2697 or online at etickethawaii.com.
Tickets for the Western Athletic Conference tournament go on sale Aug. 15. The tournament will be held Nov. 21-23 at the University of Nevada. Tickets can be purchased by calling (775) 348-7225.
Lynch wins Aloha Section PGA
John Lynch defeated Andrew Feldmann in a sudden-death playoff to win the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship yesterday at The Club at Hokulia on the Big Island.
Lynch, representing Koolau Golf Club, shot a 2-under-par 70 to tie Feldmann of Oahu Country Club for the lead with two-day totals of 146. The players went back to the 18th hole for the playoff, which Lynch won with a par. Lynch claimed the $2,500 first-prize with the win.
The top seven finishers qualify for the Western Regional CPC in Olympia, Wash., Oct. 16-19. The top 30 finishers at the regional advance to the PGA Club Professional Championship set for June 24-27, 2004, in Nashport, Ohio.
Hawaiian Invitational opens Aug. 10
Close to 90 teams are scheduled to participate in the 35th annual Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament to be held Aug. 10-16 at three pools on Oahu.
Teams from Australia, Japan, Canada, California, Washington and Oregon will join 25 local squads in the tournament. Matches will be held at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, Punahou School and Waterhouse Pool. Admission is free.
Competition will be held in nine age divisions ranging from 12-and-under to open divisions for men and women.
