Kaka'ako chili contest
If you think you have what it takes to be a chili champion, write up that recipe for Kaka'ako Kitchen's Chili Recipe Challenge, Aug. 31 at the Ward Centre restaurant.
First place prize is a trip for two to the Kona. Deadline to submit recipes is Aug. 15. Fifteen finalists will be selected to participate in the cook-off.
Chili lovers who'd rather not cook can show up to eat from 6 to 7:30 p.m.. A $10 ticket buys a sample from all 15 finalists' pots, two Heineken draft beers and a chance to vote in the People's Choice category. A portion of the proceeds generated by the Chili Recipe Challenge will go toward the prevention of child abuse in Hawaii.
Send recipes to 1200 Ala Moana Blvd., Suite 100, Honolulu 96814 or fax 596-9114.
A humane approach
Wayne Pacelle, senior vice president for Communications and Government Affairs for the Humane Society of the United States, will be the August speaker before the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse.
Pacelle sets the communications and legislative agenda for the humane society. Among his projects has been ballot initiatives for animal concerns -- including the recent initiative to ban the use of gestation crates for sows in Florida. Last year he lobbied Congress for the ban on interstate transport of birds for fighting.
Admission is free. Food samples will be distributed. Call 944-VEGI.
