1974: Tosh's New York
visits mean bad news for GOP
NEW Zealander John Rowles, who opens at Duke's Sept. 2, has been signed for a return engagement at the Flamingo in Las Vegas in February ... And local boy Dick Jensen has been given the prestigious fall opening date at the Copa in N.Y. Following Dick in the room will be B.J. Thomas and Sammy Davis Jr. (Aug. 5, 1970) ...
COLUMBIA Inn major domo Tosh Kaneshiro has an intriguing claim to fame. Last year when then-Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned, he was in New York to see the World Series. Today, when Richard Nixon's resignation takes effect, Tosh is again in New York on a softball junket and to see his beloved Dodgers play. Maybe the Republicans ought to pay Tosh to stay out of Manhattan ... Incidentally, a footnote to history: It was exactly one year ago yesterday that Spiro Agnew blasted the press for reporting charges he vigorously denied, charges that eventually led to his resignation. (Aug. 9, 1974) ...
FORMER WFL Hawaiians booster Ray Sweeney ran into Paul Spengler Jr., former promotions director for the ill-fated football team, in Jamesons and noted that Spengler was wearing a Hawaiian sports shirt. Sweeney couldn't resist cracking, "You wear your losses well, Paul." (Aug. 9, 1977) ...
Gardiner Jones came across an interesting ad for a cleaning woman posted in a publication called Exchange, put out by the Women's Campus Club at UH. The ad began: "I'm looking for a job as a cleaning woman, clean once a week, a permanent job. Wages -- five hours for $20, but as soon as I finish I'm going home. As you know, this kind of job is hard work, and also everything is very expensive so I have to charge this amount. I don't wash clothes or wash dishes because I don't have time and I don't clean the oven, windows and wall because my hands come sore or my muscle will hurt. I will do a little ironing if the house is a small one ..." Comments Jones, dryly, "I'd say the ad sets some rather exacting standards for anyone in the market for a cleaning woman." (Aug. 6, 1978) ...
WHEN Family Court Judge Patrick Yim performs at the Halekulani, it's usually a beachside wedding ceremony, but at this week's "Kamaaina Day" luncheon, he climbed onstage to say aloha to staff member Rita Kane and stayed on to sing "E Kuu Morning Dew" and "Green Rose Hula." The audience joined his staffers in yelling "Hana hou." (Aug. 9, 1979) ...
WHEN Crazy Shirts honcho Rick Ralston learned that there were gymnasts from China here for dual gymnastic meets with U.S. performers, he sent along an expression of aloha that they'd find suitably American: T-shirts. All 51 Chinese and American team members received Crazy Shirts in "aloha packages" put together by promoter Mike Rossell. (Aug. 5, 1981) ...
HTY treasurer Walter Poyntz was irked that he missed three questions in his driver's license renewal test instead of getting them all correct as he had on his previous test. Still, he passed, and just in time for his 85th birthday on Aug. 17. (Aug. 4, 1983) ... Last night was the big 5-0 birthday for Bob Gaddis, and as usual, his ex-wife, Carol Love-Gaddis (one of the great hyphenated names of all time), threw a birthday bash for him. One kicker this year: She didn't invite him. "I figured," said Love-Gaddis, "it would be the ultimate surprise party." (Aug. 5, 1989) ...
IT could have been a tragic ending yesterday morning when Tom Selleck's jeep went off the parking deck at the Outrigger Canoe Club. No, the cameras weren't rolling -- it was merely an accident. It looked pretty spectacular but Selleck wasn't seriously hurt. (Aug. 8, 1989) ...
ATTORNEY Cynthia Thielen has a new addition at her office of which she's justifiably proud. It's her daughter, Laura, who graduated magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve School of Law in 1988. Pending her admittance to the Hawaii bar, Laura will work as a law clerk for her mom. (Aug. 9, 1991) ...
