Men's Night Doubles semifinalists are set

Two seeded pairs advanced to the semifinals of the Kailua Men's Night Doubles with wins last night at Kailua Racquet Club.

The second-seeded team of Ikaika Jobe and Bradley Lum-Tucker defeated Channon Alcon and Dennis Lajola 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. The third seeds, Ryan Ideta and Erik Sandblom, beat Mika Maata and Matey Pampulov 6-2, 6-0.

Last night's winners meet in tonight's 6 p.m. semifinal. In the other semifinal, at 7:15 p.m., seventh-seeded Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen play sixth-seeded Chris Ma and Malino Oda. Tonight's winners meet in tomorrow's final at 6 p.m.

Saint Louis alumnus Spiker wins Schultz Award

Saint Louis graduate Jonathan Spiker has been named the state's winner of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

Spiker won four state championships at Saint Louis and has been accepted to Harvard. In addition to his wrestling exploits, Spiker maintained a 4.2 grade-point average and volunteered in several community projects to earn the award based on athletic and academic achievement and community service.

Mililani advances at ASA championships

Mililani Prep advanced to the third round of the under-18 ASA National Fastpitch Championships by defeating the Omaha Finesse 3-2 yesterday in Garland, Texas.

Valana Manuma drove in two runs in support of pitcher Sarah Weisskopf, who earned a complete-game victory and also registered an RBI single. Mililani Prep must win three straight games to stay in the winners bracket of the 140-team tournament.

Volleyball camp still accepting entries

The Volleyball Camp of Champions is accepting walk-up registration today and tomorrow at the Campbell High School gym.

The camp began yesterday and is open to boys and girls ages 14-18. Instructors include former Hawaii players Tony Ching and Eyal Zimet; Lena Quilantang, coach of St. Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif.; and Carla Carpenter-Kabalis, an NAIA All-American outside hitter at UH-Hilo.

Players can register at the gym at 8:30 a.m. The day's first session starts at 9:30 a.m. Registration fee is $150 today (for all three days) or $100 tomorrow (for two days only) and includes a T-shirt, position instruction and skills training. There are three sessions each day, lasting into the evening. Meals can be purchased on-site.
