Rock bands
square off
at Pipeline
TONIGHT IS the last night of qualifying for this summer's "Battle of the Rock Bands" at Pipeline Cafe. Some of the island's up-and-coming talent, including the Asfault Junkies, Linus, Less Than Zero and Olivia, have already taken part in the competition, which concludes with the finals next Thursday.
Bands scheduled to play tonight at the Pipe include Center City, DeBauch, DFD, Filthy Degenerates and Woody. Doors open at 9 p.m. for this 18-and-over event; call 589-1999 ...
TWO LOCAL promoters join forces this weekend over at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. The Architechs and Partymasters Hawaii, led by Blaise Sato and Justin Yoshino, present "Feng Shui" at the hotel's pool and inside Ciao Mein on Saturday night.
Get down there early enough and you'll be treated to free pupus (they disappear when the cover jumps from $10 to $15 at 11:30 p.m.) while sipping on libations from the Skyy martini bar that will be open next to the pool. DJs Delve, Troy T and XL will be on the turntables, and Na Ho'ola Spa will also be on hand to provide free massages. Twenty-one-and-over for this one, and the promoters remind you that "elegance is essential" when deciding what to wear. Call 957-0303 for more info ...
OVER AT Restaurant Row, Meritage is making a run at promoting events on weekends. Tomorrow night marks the start of "Nitelite," a new monthly billed as an evening of deep house with DJs Eugene, Kawika and Reid. Doors open at 10 p.m., and it's free to get in for the first hour; afterward you'll pay $5. After August's opening, "Nitelite" will move to the first Saturday of the month.
And two days later, check out "Sultry Sundays" at Meritage, with various local deejays spinning hip-hop and $3 martinis and $2 Coors Light on special. Again, cover is just $5; call 529-8686 ...
ANOTHER PARTY worth checking out tomorrow night is "Audiolab" over at Cafe Sistina, starting at 10 p.m. Billed as "the 808's only drum-and-bass monthly," this one promises to be very different musically from other events going on around town.
DJs Bass.X, Konception, Mindgame and Trypticon will be holding things down on the wheels of steel tomorrow, with MCs Enemy, Kelvin-Zero and Staplemouth providing lyrics to go with the pounding beats. Twenty-one-and-over only at this party; call 596-0061 ...
AND NOW I'm off for a few days of alcohol-induced craziness -- my birthday's tomorrow, so if you see me in the club, buy this broke columnist a drink and help me celebrate ...
