Reinventing Maui
as the ‘healthy isle’

IN days past, people went to Maui to get wasted. Now the Valley Isle is focusing on wellness. A new Maui Wellness Institute has opened at the Wailea Marriott and a new radio show, "Dr. Jim's Healthy Hawaii," has gone on the air. Those who'd like to be interviewed or know more about healthiness on Maui should dial up www.MauiWell.com ... And three health conscious Maui women, Yvonne Biegel, Linn Nishikawa and Luly Unemori are presenting LifeFest Maui at Wailea Sept. 12 to 14. Many mainland publications also are interested in covering the festival which features such presenters as Deepak Chopra, Bob Greene (personal trainer for Oprah Winfrey), Michio Kushi and others ...

THE aforementioned Biegel lists among her p.r. clients the Four Seasons Maui, one of my favorite hotels, and per her suggestion looked up her S.F. counterpart, Gaby Reims, for a look-see-experience at the new Four Seasons San Francisco downtown. Besides her duties dealing one on one with hotel guests, Reims has her work cut out just putting out press releases about the awards the Four Seasons is accumulating almost weekly. Just in its second year, the hotel received the coveted Mobile Five Star Award, was named No. 1 hotel in S.F. by the Zagat Survey and just last week, topped the Travel & Leisure magazine's 2003 World's Best Awards. Much of the credit goes to G.M. Stan Bromley who beat out numerous other top hotelmen for the enviable job. He was already well known in the Bay Area due to stints topping the Grand Hyatt and Clift hotels ...

Eatery beatery

TWO recent guests at the Bistro at Century Center were Michel Martin, who introduced classic French cuisine to Hawaii, and Karl Diebold, who with Mike Pirics operated my favorite eatery of its day, the Bistro on Kapiolani. The new Bistro serves up some classics that began at the old Bistro and on Aug. 4 will begin something Diebold was well known for serving -- a fine lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And yes, French Onion Soup is a popular item at Century Center as it was at Diebold's fine eating establishment ...

CONGRATS to Star-Bulletin writers Jerry Campany and Sjarif Goldstein for whipping KKEA's Bobby Curran and Gary Dickman in a sports trivia competition. The loss was something new for the radioheads, who'd won for four straight years up until now ...

Creme de la cream

MAUI p.r. exec Bonnie Friedman was entertaining a mainland writer at Sansei when the subject of Roselani Haupia Ice Cream came up -- no surprise since it's another of Friedman's accounts. It wasn't on the Sansei menu, but Bonnie knew Safeway could pick some up next door. When she served it at the table, the chef was unamused, but when she presented the kitchen staff the mostly untouched half-gallon, magic ensued. She now notes with some pride that the new favorite on the Sansei dessert list is Haupia Ice Cream Pie ...
