Hawaiian nationalists and supporters gathered yesterday to celebrate Sovereignty Restoration Day at Thomas Square. The U.S. flag was lowered and Hawaiian kingdom banners were unfurled at the spot where British Adm. Richard Thomas ordered the Union Jack lowered and the Hawaiian flag raised on July 31, 1843, returning sovereignty to the Hawaiian kingdom after five months of British occupation. Hawaiian sovereignty activist Richard Kinney spoke yesterday during the ceremony.
