Local products close summer league run
Two players with Hawaii ties enjoyed productive days during the final session of the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue yesterday at Salt Lake Community College.
Former Brigham Young-Hawaii guard Yuta Tabuse hit two 3-point goals and finished with nine points in the Dallas Mavericks' 85-80 loss to San Antonio in the NBA summer league. Former Hawaii guard Predrag Savovic also scored nine points to help Denver defeat Portland 98-65.
Another UH product, forward Troy Ostler, scored two points in New York's 71-68 loss to Utah.
Sakai second at Jr. National Championships
Mililani's Debbi Sakai couldn't complete a wrestling trifecta yesterday.
Colorado's Claire Dupont defeated Sakai 12-8 in the championship match of the 110-pound division yesterday at the Asics Junior National Championships. Sakai, a winner at the USGWA High School Championship and the USA Fila National Team Trials, lost a close match in the final seconds.
Danyelle Heydin wrestled her best match of the tournament to clinch third place in the 119-pound division. Heydin defeated Asics All-American Rachel Groft 6-3. Shyla Iokia lost 10-4 to Washinton's Cristy Watson to finish eighth in the same division.
Ku'u'i'iini Johnson captured third in the 138-pound class by recording a technical fall against Julie Duarte (Calif.).
Amanda Chittenden of Michigan pinned 2003 Hawaii state champion Selina Perez in the150-pound class. In the 165-pound division, Ashley Trucan pinned Melissa Buster in 1 minute, 40 seconds to take 7th-place.
Goltz, Cordell win marathon
Over 900 athletes crossed the finish line at the 21st annual Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Runs yesterday. The Wilderness runs are comprised of four events -- marathon, 10-mile rim run, five mile Caldera run, five mile non-competititve walk -- held at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The Big Island's Dan Goltz and Susan Cordell were the first male and female competitors to complete the marathon. Goltz crossed the finish line with a time of 3 hours, 14 minutes and 28 seconds. Cordell came in at 4:19:54 to win her third consecutive volcano marathon.
Hilo wins at Little League regional
The Hilo Little League baseball team battered Washington for nine runs on 10 hits yesterday to win its first game in the senior division (15-16 year olds) of the Little League regional tournament.
Wes Yada and Matt Haasenritter delivered two hits for Hilo who plays Alaska today in the six team tournament.
Arceneaux, Ilustre to speak at Quarterback Club
Darnell Arceneaux, the new football coach at Saint Louis, will speak at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Also slated to speak are KITV weekend sports anchor Kanoa Leahey and pro beach volleyball players Heidi Ilustre and Tanya Fuamatu. Ilustre is a former Rainbow Wahine and Fuamatu played for University of Hawaii-Hilo.
Tomorrow's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting promptly at noon. It is open to the public.
