Verizon hiccup causes
delays for Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines flights were delayed by up to four hours yesterday after the airline's computer system went down.
Airline spokesman Keoni Wagner said 80 percent of the airline's data and telecommunications lines at its headquarters near Honolulu Airport went down around 5:15 a.m., causing delays throughout the system. The problem was a result of a failure of Verizon Hawaii data lines, he said.
Verizon spokeswoman Ann Nishida said the power supply "tripped" at Verizon's facility near the airport. The cause was not immediately known but it could have been lightning, she said. The power supply was restored around 9:20 a.m., Nishida said.
Hawaiian Air flights to Hawaii were kept on the ground on the West Coast until Verizon restored circuits and the airline's computer system was again running, Wagner said.
Flights to the mainland were also expected to be delayed, Wagner said. Interisland flights were running about an hour behind but the airline hoped to make up that delay and get back to its regular schedule during the day, he said.
