Pearl Harbor-based ship
returns from Iraq today

The Pearl Harbor-based USS O'Kane was scheduled to return home from the war in Iraq this morning.

The 30 officers and 205 enlisted personnel aboard the Aegis guided-missile destroyer left Hawaii on Jan. 17 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During the war, the O'Kane launched Tomahawk missiles, acted as a theater ballistic defense ship and served as the defense ship during maritime interdiction operations, Navy spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Jane Campbell said.

The ship also provided humanitarian aid in the port of Umm Qasar, she said.

Commissioned in 1999, the O'Kane is Pearl Harbor's newest surface ship and is part of the Pearl Harbor-based Destroyer Squadron 31.
