English finishes strong in summer league

SALT LAKE CITY || Former Hawaii basketball player Carl English scored 20 points to help Indiana/Philadelphia defeat Utah 96-84 in the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue yesterday at Salt Lake Community College's Bruin Arena.

English made eight of 11 shots from the field, including two 3-point goals, in 24 minutes for Indiana/Philadelphia, which finished 4-1 in the NBA summer league.

English, who signed a free-agent contract with Indiana last week, had scored just 11 points on 4-for-16 shooting in Indiana/Philadelphia's previous four games in the league.

Three players with Hawaii ties close play in the league today. Dallas' Yuta Tabuse (BYU-Hawaii), Denver's Predrag Savovic (UH) and New York's Troy Ostler (UH) are scheduled to be in action. Savovic had 10 points and five assists against Phoenix on Thursday.

Sakai moves into wrestling semifinals

FARGO, N.D. || Mililani wrestler Debbi Sakai won all four of her matches yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Asics Junior National Championships.

Sakai went 4-0 in the 110-pound division on the opening day of the tournament. She defeated Ohio's Amanda Breezley 13-2, Connecticut's Erin Murphy 12-0 and pinned Texas' Leann Barney. Sakai defeated All-American Nicole Darrow of New York 7-4 to move on to today's semifinal round.

Sakai is seeking her third national championship, having already won the USGWA High School Championship and USA Fila National Team Trials.

In the 119-pound class, Kailua's Danyelle Hedin went 3-1, falling to Jessica Jauck of California, and Waianae's Shyla Iokia finished the day at 2-2.

Radford's Kuuini Johnson went 2-1 in the 138-pound division, losing to Brandy Rosenbrock of Michigan.

Baldwin's Selina Perez was 1-2 in the 150-pound class and Hilo's Ashley Truchan went 0-2 in the 265-pound class. They will wrestle for seventh in their weight classes today.

Sailing canoe race rescheduled

The Aston Hotels & Resorts Na Holo Kai Challenge, a Hawaiian Sailing Canoe race scheduled for today, has been moved to Aug.16.
