Maui police officer
shoots man

WAILUKU >> A 25-year-old Kula man was in critical condition last night at Maui Memorial Medical Center after being shot in the shoulder by a Maui police officer.

A police dispatcher received a call at 7:55 a.m. yesterday reporting a man was hit with a baseball bat at a vacant lot on Pueo Drive in Kula, police Lt. Jon Morioka said.

Two patrol officers responded to the call, the first arriving at 8:13 a.m.

Morioka said that while conducting an inquiry and attempting to contact a female in a parked vehicle at the vacant lot, police noticed a man in the front passenger seat.

Morioka said the man reached beneath the seat and grabbed a handgun.

"The officers attempted to get control of the weapon, but after repeated attempts and warnings, the male refused to surrender his weapon," Morioka said.

Morioka said an officer shot the male once in the upper right shoulder.

He said following the shooting, the man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Morioka said charges against the man are pending investigation.

Police did not say what happened to the man who reportedly was hit with a baseball bat.
