HPD officer's services are set for next week
Funeral services have been set for the Honolulu police motorcycle officer who was killed earlier this week during a multivehicle collision.
Officer Ryan Goto was riding Waianae-bound on Farrington Highway with four other motorcycle officers when three of the officers smashed into an out-of-control car that crossed over the median near Honokai Hale.
Goto and a 10-year-old girl, who was in the passenger seat of the oncoming car, were both killed in the crash.
Visitation for Goto will be held at Borthwick Mortuary at 1330 Maunakea St. on Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m., with services held from 3 to 4 p.m. On Friday a police motorcade from Borthwick Mortuary will pass Honolulu Police Department headquarters at 801 Beretania St. and proceed to Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe.
The motorcade starts at 9 a.m., with graveside services starting at 10 a.m.
Man airlifted from UH ship near Alaska
Coast Guard rescue crews helped transport a sick 58-year-old man from a University of Hawaii research vessel earlier this week near Alaska.
The Kilo Moana was west of St. George Island in the Pribilofs when the Coast Guard received an emergency call that one of the Moana's crew members, David Gravatt, was suffering a possible heart attack. The Coast Guard sent the cutter Rush to assist. The Pribilof Islands are about 300 miles from the Alaskan mainland in the Bering Sea.
Once in range, the Rush launched a helicopter to airlift the patient to St. Paul Island, where a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft awaited to transport the patient to Kodiak, Alaska. The Coast Guard had no update on Gravatt's condition.
Kaneohe-bound side of Likelike to be closed
The Kaneohe-bound lanes of Likelike Highway will be closed from 7 p.m. today until 7 a.m. tomorrow for maintenance work in the Wilson Tunnel, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The highway in the Kaneohe-bound direction will be closed from Kahekili Highway to Wilson Tunnel.
Motorists are advised to take Pali Highway or the H-3 freeway.
Bikers raise $2,000 for cancer society
More than $2,000 was raised by 45 bike riders July 5 at a "Race for Life" to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the organization reported.
The 2003 American Bicycle Association sponsored the event at Wheeler BMX track at Wheeler Army Air Field.
Jason Chang, organizer of the event, said 13 new riders made it Hawaii's largest BMX race of the year.
"Race for Life is a great way for a person to see if BMX is for them," he said. People can participate for a $10 donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, he said.

Police arrest man for allegedly head-butting wife
Honolulu police arrested a 34-year-old Waimanalo man earlier this week for allegedly head-butting his wife.
Police said the suspect and the 27-year-old victim were involved in an argument at 8 p.m. Thursday. The argument escalated when the suspect allegedly poked his wife in the jaw with his finger, then hit her head with his head.
Police later arrested the man for suspicion of abuse of a household member.

Korean visitor drowns in hotel swimming pool
A 37-year-old man visiting from Korea drowned Thursday afternoon in a swimming pool at the Waikiki Beach Marriott hotel, police said.
Seung Y. Lee, of Seoul, did not know how to swim but went into the pool to play with his children. He was found lifeless at the bottom of the pool.

Man pulled from water at Ala Moana dies
A 20-year-old man who was pulled from the ocean at Ala Moana Beach last week died Wednesday at Straub Hospital.
The man, who could not swim, was walking along the beach behind his father July 16 when the father noticed he was missing, said Jim Howe, city Ocean Safety Division operations chief.
When lifeguards found him underwater about 8:50 a.m., he was not breathing and had no pulse, Howe said.

2 suspects charged in Big Isle break-ins
Big Island police have charged two men who may have been involved in a number of recent break-ins in the Puako and Hapuna Beach areas.
The suspects were identified as Brandon Halmas, 23, of Kailua-Kona, and Byers Naope, 19, of Kainaliu. Both were charged by Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives with unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
Halmas, who was also wanted on an unrelated warrant, is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $3,000 bail. Naope is being held on $1,000 bail.
Police are asking anyone with additional information about vehicle break-ins at the Puako or Hapuna Beach areas to call officer Mark Farias, of the South Kohala Community Policing Program, at 887-3080 or the police nonemergency number at 935-3311.

Police seek escapee from prison in Hilo
Big Island police are looking for a 24-year-old inmate who escaped earlier this month from the Hale Nani Correctional Facility in Hilo.
The escapee was identified as Davi F. Alvarez, who was reported missing during a 10:18 a.m. check at the facility on July 8. Alvarez is described as being 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds and having brown hair and brown eyes.

Tire accident kills inspector in N. Kona
A 61-year-old Captain Cook man was killed by a tire that broke loose from a trailer earlier this week, according to Big Island police.
The victim was identified as Clifford Vierra, an inspector with CTS Earth Moving Inc. Police said that on Thursday, Vierra was conducting an inspection of the pavement on Laaloa Avenue in North Kona when a tire came off the rear axle of a Dumpster-trailer and struck him. Police said the tire continued to roll down Laaloa and damaged several mailboxes, a sign and a rock wall before coming to stop.
Vierra was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:02 a.m. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the fatality.
Vierra's death was the 16th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared with 15 at the same time last year.
