The director of the U.S. Pacific Basic Research Center in Hilo will receive a national award for his contributions to science and humanity. Dennis Gonsalves is being presented the 2003 leadership in Science Public Service Award today at a meeting of the American Society of Plan Biologists at the Hawaii Convention Center. A research discovery by Gonsalves and his colleagues led to the development of papaya resistant to the attacks of the ringspot virus.
ASBP is a nonprofit society of about 6,000 scientists conducting research in the United States and some 50 other nations. The group's annual meeting began yesterday in Hawaii and runs through Wednesday.
