Dear Coach, please
excuse my column
THE story of June Jones sending personal notes to each and every conference coach to explain his lateness in arriving at the WAC media days sounds like one of the coolest and classiest sports moves in recent memory. Seriously, what a considerate and thoughtful thing to do, and it had to have scored some points around the conference (and UH has had a history of doing the opposite in recent years).
This is a new look for Coach Jones, and it suits him.
>> Also, it's nice to see he's allowed to use the UH letterhead again.
>> No doubt the Hawaii Bowl eligibility fiasco could have been similarly diffused if handled in the same smart manner. Sometimes it has seemed as if the UH administration has taken cues for its public posture from Jones. Hopefully it does so here.
>> What columnist wouldn't say the state should not cut funding for high school athletics? So here you go: The state should not cut funding for high school athletics.
>> After all, I think we can all remember the days when playing on the "soft tennis" team kept us out of trouble and off the streets ...
>> Sorry to see a sad day for Michelle Wie. But before she calls out Tiger, bypasses the LPGA and laughs in the faces of men, she needs to be able to beat the other girls.
And on the junior circuit, which Team Wie has sometimes ignored of late, she is the biggest target out there.
But this is where she can learn about winning ... and losing, too.
>> Dear Sports Columnist:
"I think your column raises some interesting points, but I think the state tournament is aimed at dethroning Saint Louis and ILH schools in general. The OIA now has four berths in Division I and two berths in Division II. What's up with that? The ILH dominates in basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc. ... The OIA principals are out of control. They should just come out and say that the ILH can't compete in state tourneys. ..."
COMMENT: Hey, it's unfair for the ILH heading into state tournaments, yes. It's unfair for everyone else to compete against private schools with all the advantages.
Life is tough all over.
>> I was speaking to a famous sports columnist a couple weeks ago, looking for advice on writing (because let's face it, you people deserve better than this).
"Don't be like those talk shows," he said. "Do you do any sports talk radio?"
Yeah, the paper has a show once a week (Thursday nights after the Giants, 1420-AM!).
"Don't make it like that."
Oh, so you've heard the show.
>> As you read this I am off for a week's vacation with my wife's family.
Who spends late July, early August in Omaha?
Just me and Benny Agbayani.
