Berg leads team USA to sweep
Former Punahou product Lindsey Berg set the U.S. National team to its third straight victory at the FIVB World Grand Prix yesterday.
Berg tallied 33 assists and three blocks for points as team USA swept the Netherlands 25-23, 25-20, 25-15. The U.S. improves to 3-0 in pool play including victories over Cuba and Japan earlier this week.
Logan Tom, daughter of the Big Island's Mel Tom, hit .500 with 11 kills. Tom also contributed two stuffs and two aces to the win.
There are no matches scheduled today. Pool play resumes tomorrow with the U.S. playing Germany (2-1).
Central Maui little league team goes to regional
Shevis Shima went 2-for-3 with five RBIs as Central Maui defeated Washington 18-3 in the Division I Little League tournament. Central Maui advances to Sunday's Western Regional tournament in Billings, Mont. The winner of the regional goes to the Big League World Series held in South Carolina from Aug. 2-9. In the tournament, Central Maui outscored its opponents 39-5 and outslugged them 42-9.
Castle's Maeda to attend NFL youth summit
CANTON, Ohio >> Castle's Nelson Maeda is one of 50 coaches from around the nation who will participate in the NFL Youth Football Summit during the 2003 Hall of Fame Weekend July 31-Aug. 3.
Maeda, who led the Knights to last season's Oahu Interscholastic Association championship and an appearance in the state title game, was chosen as Hawaii's state representative for the event. More than 150 individuals are set to participate in the event, including former NFL players-turned youth coaches, experts in sports psychology and medicine and academic advisors.

Noseriding Classic Aug. 9-10 at Kuhio Beach
The seventh annual Hawaiian Noseriding Classic is scheduled for Aug. 9-10 at Kuhio Beach Park and Queen's Break in Waikiki.
The Hawaiian Longboarding Company and Hawaii International Surf Museum event showcases the unique style of noseriding. The contest will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily and the public is welcome to attend.
There will be a sale and display of vintage and modern longboards and surf memorabilia, with a percentage of the proceeds going to Parents and Children Together.

Free roughwater swim clinics offered in Waikiki
Free Waikiki roughwater swim clinics continue July 26 and Aug. 16 at Sans Souci Kaimana Beach.
Sponsored by the Waikiki roughwater swim committee, the clinics are set up to inform the public on the details of the annual Labor Day Waikiki Roughwater Swim. Training guidelines, course orientation, conditioning and mechanics, strategy, safety and ocean swimming skills will be covered. For information, contact Joe Lileikis at 395-7433.
Eldredges to conduct first annual baseball clinic
Boasting more than 125 years of combined coaching experience, Hawaii's Eldredge family will conduct its first annual Eldredge Athletics Youth Baseball Clinic Aug. 9 at the Punahou School baseball field.
To celebrate the baseball heritage of patriarch Pop Eldredge, sons Dave and Pal and grandsons Duane and Boy have formed Eldredge Athletics, a nonprofit organization to benefit youth sports. Family members have coached teams in numerous youth world series, regional, Interscholastic League of Honolulu, state high school, college divisional and regional championships.

Movers, All-Stars cancel contest
The Hawaii Island Movers game against the Hawaii Collegiate All Stars scheduled for tomorrow at Murakami Stadium has been canceled.
The games between the teams at Murakami Stadium Saturday at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. will be played.
