COURTESY NA MEA HAWAII
Artists pay tribute to Hawaii's favorite footwear during Slippah Saturday.

Slippahs will star at the Na Mea Hawaii Store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, but not just any old rubbah kine. Nope. The store at 851 Fort Street Mall will instead be filled with both functional and whimsical slipper creations by Babs Miyano, Nake'u Awai, Betty Mu'u, Kahili Slippers, Toyo Hawaii, "the Lauhala Lady" Linda Schweitzer, Nai'a Watson and other local artists.

The day will bring together a truly original collection of Hawaii's favorite footwear that will remain on display through the month of August.

There will be chalk art and balloon magic for the kids, a raffle for the adults -- the prizes being a pair of "out on the town" slippers, and specially created Na Mea Goodie Bags. Plus everyone who comes wearing their own custom created slippers will be entered into a special drawing for family tickets to "On Dragonfly Wings."

Admission is free. For more information, call 398-6848

Art celebration at UH

The 13th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disability Act will be celebrated 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus Center Courtyard with "Art Enabled: My Body is Art."

Students with disabilities from UH and Easter Seals will meet potential role models from the community, who also have disabilities, as a way to increase self-confidence and positive self-identity.

There will be speakers, poetry, music, painting and the creation of a mural by students and artists.

(Volunteers are still needed to help assist students and artists with their contributions to the mural.)

Get clothed for school

Teens heading back to school can get started on their fall wardrobe by taking in a fashion show from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Macy's THISISIT Department at Pearlridge Center.

DJs from the Universal DJ School and the Hypersquad Dancers will perform for the event, which features themes like "Sir Mix-a-Lot," in a segment combining vintage, thrift-store and fairytale-inspired looks, and "Miss Conduct," an '80s-inspired grunge-meets-rocker girl look.

There'll be streetwear for the guys as well, with the introduction of two new labels exclusive to Macy's, American Rag and rapper Eminem's Shady Limited.

The event is free. For more information, call 945-5894.
