Downtown celebrates
‘American Brews’

BEER DRINKERS have a great reason to head downtown for a few this Saturday: the first-ever "American Brews, Blues and BBQs" takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. on Nuuanu Avenue between Pauahi and King streets.

July is National American Beer Month (if you don't know, now you know), and a variety of events are scheduled throughout the downtown area to help keep things festive. In addition to beer tasting and a "Beer and BBQ Cook Off Challenge," residents have a chance to take part in a home brew master demonstration class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with Jim Bailey, visit a beer museum and enjoy blues music by the Biker's Blues Band, Honolulu Blue Devils, David Lamar Project and Rocket Science. Call 486-3057 ...

CAN'T MAKE it downtown on Saturday? Head over to Brew Moon on Monday for a beer dinner with executive chef Matthew Glick and brew master Greg Yount, the first one to be held since becoming a locally owned restaurant in 2001.

You'll score a free Brew Moon beer glass if you decide to check out the four-course dinner with beer pairings; cost is $50 per person. Call 593-0088 for reservations ...

SATURDAY ALSO marks what's being called the "Last Punk Show" at Pink Cadillac in Waikiki. From what I understand, the nightspot at 478 Ena Road will flip to a "new high-energy dance club," with a male revue on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and female go-go dancers all night long on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Center City, Extra Stout, Geronimo, Witness B.C. and Woody are all on the bill for this weekend's final punk fling, and $5 gets you through the door. Call 946-6499 ...

DRAG YOURSELF out of bed on Sunday morning and head over to the Kapiolani Park Bandstand for the 33rd Annual Ukulele Festival from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The free celebration features a number of talented local musicians, including Ernie Cruz Jr., Troy Fernandez, Raiatea Helm, Herb "Ohta-san" Ohta and his son, Herb Ohta Jr., and Roy Sakuma with his 800-piece ukulele band. Danny Kaleikini emcees; call 732-3739 ...

AND ON Monday, head over to Wave Waikiki for "Pretty in Punk," a rock concert/fashion show that will showcase products from Lingerie Heaven and the Last Resort.

Doors open at 8 p.m. for this 18-and-over party, with the Hellbound Hounds and Saggy Tart and the Meat Cutters providing a soundtrack for the evening. Call 952-6435 ...
