2 Waiawa escapees
captured at nearby cemetery

Two inmates who escaped from Waiawa Correctional Facility yesterday were caught 10 hours later not far from the minimum security facility.

Police and state deputy sheriffs arrested James Bautista, 19, and Andrew Schwab, 24, on Mililani Memorial Park Road at 10:45 a.m. yesterday.

A person spotted the pair near the entrance to the cemetery and anonymously reported it to police. Police, deputy sheriffs and prison guards quickly converged on the site and surrounded the escapees.

Bautista and Schwab were last seen in their dormitory at the minimum-security facility at 12:30 a.m. They apparently exited their dormitory through a window next to Bautista's bed. Prison officials discovered some glass louvers had been removed.

The pair needed to get past two fences to leave prison grounds, but "they're relatively low, about six feet," said Ted Sakai, Waiawa Correctional Facility warden.

Bautista is serving time for robbery, burglary, kidnapping, theft and drug convictions. Schwab was in prison for robbery, burglary and auto theft. Each faces an additional escape charge which carries a maximum five-year prison term.
