Maui lauds its onions

Maui celebrates one of its most famous residents, the sweet onion, at the annual Maui Onion Festival Aug. 2 and 3 at Whaler's Village in Kaanapali.

Mindy Sterling (Frau Farbissina in the "Austin Powers" movies) will be the celebrity-in-residence for the event, providing commentary for the onion-eating contest on Saturday. She'll also be available for autographs and photos.

The free festival is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The Maui onion also takes center stage in cooking demonstrations, games, entertainment and food sales.

Plus, enter through Monday for the festival's annual recipe contest. Cooks are invited to submit onion dishes for judging at noon Aug. 2 (professional cooks) and Aug. 3 (amateur cooks). Top prize in each category is $100, plus a trip to Honolulu to appear on Hawaiian Electric Co.'s "The Electric Kitchen" cooking show.

There is no fee to enter. Get forms via whalersvillage.com or at the Whalers Village management office. Call (808) 661-4567 for more information.
