Bananas were
on the run


YOU WEREN'T hallucinating if you spotted some man-size bananas scrambling to get away from a crowd on Saturday at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Five local triathletes agreed to suit up in foam rubber costumes for the third annual "Banana Man Chase," presented by Jamba Juice as a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Hawaii.

Brigitte and Bob Egbert, Tanya Florin and Joe Zwack were the ones who got chased down by division winners, 25 of whom will each be rewarded with free smoothies for a year ...

TICKETS ARE still available for this weekend's "KCCN FM100 Birthday Bash," taking place Friday and Saturday at the Waikiki Shell.

Now in its 13th year, the "Birthday Bash" was the event of the summer for island music fans during much of the '90s; when competing concerts started popping up, promoters took things to the next level and expanded the celebration to a pair of shows.

Among the bands scheduled to perform on Friday: Ekolu, Sean Na'auao, Na Palapalai, the Next Generation, O-Shen, Pati, Sudden Rush and Three Plus. Saturday's lineup includes B.E.T., Fiji, Kapena, Keahiwai, Natural Vibrations and Ten Feet. The Island Music MVPs, an all-star band formed just for the "Birthday Bash," will also be on hand to wrap things up each night. Tickets range from $18.50 to $26. Call 296-1003 for more info ...

PART-TIME HONOLULU resident Rip Taylor is set to join other local celebrities on Thursday to help scoop for charity at the Cold Stone Creamery in Waikiki. From 5 to 8 p.m., you can get a free "Make-a-Wish Creation," based on a recipe developed in commemoration of the event and National Ice Cream Month.

This is the second year for Cold Stone's "World's Largest Ice Cream Social," which takes place at all of the company's retail locations in the United States as a fund-raiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation ...

BETTER START making plans for the weekend soon -- there's a lot of stuff going on as we hit the final stretch of summer in 2003.
