3 brush fires flare
in 1 hour in Maili

A "suspicious" brush fire in Maili burned to within 50 feet of a home and a chicken farm on Paakea Road last night, the fire department said.
It was one of three brush fires that broke out within a mile of each other in a little over an hour, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.
A neighbor who had access to a bulldozer helped firefighters cut a fire break and control the fire before it caused any property damage.
The fire sent smoke into another home where a large party was going on, but no evacuations were necessary, Tejada said.
The fire broke out about 6:50 p.m. on Paakea Road and the end of Maliona Street and burned about 25 acres.
About an hour later, a fire broke out on Paakea near Maili Road and burned about an acre, and another fire broke out at 8 p.m. on Kulaaupuni Street near St. John's Road, Tejada said.
About 20 fire units, including four federal fire trucks, battled the blazes. Tejada said fire trucks from as far away as downtown Honolulu were called.
