THE WEEK THAT WAS
1973: Society of Seven
gets S.O.S. from
5th Dimension
FOLLOWING an incident in the state prison last week it occurred to Bob Maxwell that whenever an inmate is injured and rushed to a public hospital, the medical report is 100 percent predictable: "He is in guarded condition." ... The Blue Kangaroo softball team challenged the Society of Seven to a game, but the SOS didn't have quite enough players for a complete team. To the rescue came the 5th Dimension. The group came in to hear the SOS the other night and volunteered to join forces against the Kangarooters -- at least the three guys in the group did, Billy Davis, Ron Townson and Lamont McLemore. ANYONE want to buy a used motorcycle -- slightly damaged -- cheap? Dick Jensen, who broke his collarbone last week when he was involved in a traffic mishap, is unloading his and giving up motorcycles for good. Despite the break, Jensen showed up Sunday at a party given by Don Chapman, of Travel Enterprises, perhaps mindful that the firm puts hundreds of visitors into the Oceania showroom each week. Filling in for the injured Jensen last night and for the next couple of weeks is Tommy Sands. Jensen estimates he'll be out of action for at least a month. (July 23, 1974) ...
JUST three months after the birth of her baby, Laura Blears Ching is back on the sports scene, helping her Lahaina Canoe Club team take first-place gold medal in the Lahaina canoe races ... Tim Guard, on the other hand, says he's retiring from paddling. Long a standout on the Outrigger Canoe Club teams, Guard said once he reached the "masters" category, he realized it was time to hang 'em up. (July 23, 1978) ...
PUBLICAN Mickey Hummer may do record business in "doubles" tomorrow night at Boyd's, his downtown saloon. Guest bartender from 5 to 7 p.m. will be Playboy's August "Playmate," Victoria Cooke ... Meanwhile, across the street from Boyd's, tenants of the Alexander Young Building are a bit nervous that the owners, Northwest Mutual Life of Milwaukee, have applied for a permit from the city to blow the building down, this despite a determined effort to place the structure on the National Historic Register. ATTRACTIVE couple at the Outrigger Canoe Club the other night: Andy Soriano, whose family owns the San Miguel Brewery in the Philippines, and local model Christie Weckert, who was once the woman in the life of Prince Radziwill following his divorce from Lee Radziwill, sister of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Chris, who knew Soriano from the days in the jet-set circles of Europe, showed him the sights of Hawaii before he headed off to New York and London. (July 24, 1981) ...
NEW Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen has named restaurateur Jeff Harman to the board of directors of the NFL team. Bowlen is part owner of Nick's Fishmarket, and Harman is chairman of the Fishmarket Restaurant Inc., with offices in Chicago and Honolulu. Bowlen had earlier named localite Fred Hemmings to the board, so now it has even more of an isle flavor. (July 20, 1984) ...
ARCHITECT Fritz Johnson continues to have trouble with his Ferrari. You may recall an item here about a hotel valet breaking the key off in the lock, forcing Johnson and his date to take taxis home. The hotel had a new key made, but when Johnson returned it failed to work -- the story goes on and on. The other night, he showed up at the Bistro and had to have a friend drive him home. The water pump on the luxury car broke just as Johnson arrived at the restaurant, and he had to leave the car on the street. Yep, same date with him, and she must be tiring of that Ferrari, however nice it looks. (July 20, 1982) ...
THAT mountain of rocks at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and South Street promises to become a fountain one of these days, but it's already drawing the ire of such people as City Councilman Arnold Morgado, who thinks it may become a traffic hazard. The rock pile is the work-in-progress of Chuck Watson, the self-taught sculptor who's working not only on the fountain, but on a pair of bronze figures for a luxury hotel on Penang, off the coast of Malaysia, as well.
