McLachlin's run over at Amateur Public Links

GALLOWAY, N.J. >> Honolulu's Parker McLachlin saw his run at the U.S. Amateur Public Links end after the first round of match play yesterday. McLachlin was beaten by 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Danny Green, 1 up.

The second and third rounds of match play will be contested today, with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on Friday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.

Thirty-two golfers remain in contention.

Judo camp to feature former world champ

A former world champion, former All Japan champion and an Olympic silver medalist headline the third annual International Summer Judo Camp at Hawaii Tokai International College.

The camp, which runs July 21-27, will include a combination of clinics, lectures and classes in Japanese language and culture. Cost is $25 for the judo clinic only, $70 for the entire program. The application deadline is Friday.

Kauai's Irons into third round of Billabong Pro

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa >> Kauai's Andy Irons is into the third round of the $250,000 Billabong Pro.

Irons, the reigning Association of Surfing Professionals world champion, was beaten in round one Tuesday, but eliminated South Africa's Warwick Wright in the second round to stay in the hunt.

Hawaii's Kalani Robb withdrew from the event due to illness.

21st Traditional Karate Championships set

Karate and martial arts students of all ages and ranks are eligible to enter the 21st annual Aloha State Traditional Karate Championships, set for Aug. 10 at the Aliamanu Military Reservation.

Competition will be held in Kata, Kumite and Kobudo events.

Transpac division winners trickle in

The various class winners continue to come in at the 42nd Transpacific Yacht Race.

Reinrag2, out of Oregon, won Division 3 while also receiving the Don Clothier Trophy for boats less than 50 feet long, and was fastest of the eight JBoats that competed.

Wild Thing won Division 4 on a 1D35. Wind Dancer won the Division 5 race by about 3 1/2 hours in corrected time.

Barking Spider won the Aloha B race despite sporting a crew made entirely of Transpac rookies. Skipper David Kory said the goal was just to cross the finish line.

Illusion won the Cal 40 division.

Turtle Bay to host qualifying tournament

A qualifying golf tournament for the Buick Scramble will be held Aug. 10 at the Turtle Bay Resort's George Fazio Course.

The scramble is open to amateur golfers of all ages and skill levels with certified USGA handicap indexes. Players compete in four-person teams. Local winners advance to one of 130 PGA sectional championships. The sectional winners move on to the national championship set for Oct. 8-12 in Orlando, Fla.

The entry fee is $105 per person.

Volleyball doubles championships this weekend

The Oahu Volleyball Association is sponsoring the Oahu Volleyball doubles championships on July 19-20. The tournament will have men's and women's Open divisions and feature several current and former Warrior and Rainbow Wahine volleyball players.

The double elimination tournament starts at 8:15 a.m. and play beings at 9 a.m. Expected to compete are Tony Ching, Allen Allen, Daniel Rasay, Keri Poppinga, Troy Hotz, Curt Vaughn, Maja Gustin, Lily Kahumoku, Janice Harrer and Tanya Fuamatu.

Allen and Ching to coach 'Champions' camp

An all-star coaching staff will conduct the Volleyball Camp of Champions at Seabury Hall on July 25-28. Former U.S. national team member Allen Allen, former Warrior Tony Ching, and current player Arri Jeshke are instructors at the clinic on Maui. Lena Quilantang, a former defensive specialist for Long Beach State, and Kahala Kabalis, a member of the Chaminade women's team, are also part of the coaching staff.

HPU baseball golf outing nets more than $17,000

The ninth annual Hawaii Pacific University Baseball Invitational Golf Tournament raised $17,650 for the HPU baseball program.

The tournament, held July 10 at the Pearl Country Club, was organized by the HPU Power Club and coach Allen Sato and his staff. Sato also recently held the first HPU Baseball Golf Invitational on the mainland, at the California Country Club in Whittier June 20.

Proceeds will go toward alleviating expenses and traveling costs for the upcoming academic year.
