Lady Bleu II first to reach Hawaii
Aloha A class entry Lady Bleu II became the first boat to finish the Transpacific Yacht yesterday, ending 13 days at sea.
The Lady Blue wieghs 30 tons, as much as Division I boats Pegasus and Pyewacket combined and took advantage of the five-day head start on the favorites.
Pegasus, piloted by Phillippe Kahn, set a mileage record yesterday and figures to win the race on adjusted time. The Reichel/Pugh 77 has gone 356 miles in the past 24 hours, building a 74-mile lead over Pyewacket only 288 miles out of Waikiki. The previous 24-hour record was 353 miles, set by Doug Baker's Andrews 70 Magnitude in 1999.
Pegusus expects to hit Waikiki at around 5 a.m. today.
Fujishige, Tateishi win first-round matches
Colin Fujishige of Kaneohe and Skyler Tateishi of Kailua were perfect in their first day of competition at the USTA Boys Super National Clay Court Tournament for 14-year olds at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., yesterday.
Fujishige beat Stuart Kepler of Dallas 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 256 while Tateishi swept Arsenio Culver 6-4, 6-3.
They also played doubles, but with different partners.
Fujishige teamed with Luke Marchese to beat Todd Hatcher and Eric Turner 6-1, 7-6 (5) and Pale Pongi and Fujishige beat George Diggs and Denny Fafek 6-2, 6-0.
