Pegasus, Pyewacket gaining speed
With wind making an appearance at last, Division 1 competitors Pegasus and Pyewacket approached record one-day runs, according to yesterday's report from the 42nd Transpacific Yacht Race.
Pegasus sailed 349 miles and Pyewacket 347, both averaging 14.5 knots, in the 24-hour period before yesterday's roll call. Pegasus held a 60-mile lead with 636 to go in the 2,225-nautical mile race.
The race record is 353 miles in a day, set by Magnitude in 1999.
Beau Geste made a run in the Division 2 race , closing to within six miles of division leader Alta Vita.
But on a fast day, Alta Vita also edged to less than an hour behind Illusion in the corrected handicap time competition.
Turtle Bay to host qualifying tournament
A qualifying golf tournament for the Buick Scramble will be held (Aug. 10) at the Turtle Bay Resort's George Fazio Course.
The scramble is open to amateur golfers of all ages and skill levels with certified USGA handicap indexes. Players compete in four-person teams. Local winners advance to one of 130 PGA sectional championships. The sectional winners move on to the national championship set for Oct. 8-12 in Orlando, Fla.
The entry fee is $105 per person.

State track champs and Dragon Boats at QB Club
Sam Moku, coach of 2003 boys track and field state champion Kamehameha Schools, will speak tomorrow at the weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Other speakers include drug rehabilitation expert Dave Kowalski of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Dragon Boat Race promoter Gifford Chang.
The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant, with the program to follow at noon. Lunch is $7.50 for members, $8 for non-members. The public is invited.
