1973: ‘Deep Throat’
star adorns beach
at Kahala Hilton

MET adventurer deluxe Sir Edmund Hillary on Channel 4's "Hawaii AM" show Monday (we're co-hosting with Don Robbs this week) and found him fascinating. Asked if he were going in for any more strenuous climbs such as Mount Everest, Sir Edmund shook his head and said, "I'm a bit long in the tooth for that now." (July 15, 1969) ...

WHILE in Honolulu last week, Art Linkletter began to write a book on drug addiction, working six hours a day on it. His daughter, Diane, lost her life in a drug-related incident two years ago, and the TV performer has done little else since then except preach the gospel of drug control. (July 16, 1971) ... At a Hilton Hawaiian Village staff meeting yesterday, Frenchman Serge D'Rovencourt showed up with a French flag, chiding other execs for not reminding him it was Bastille Day. "I'm from Texas," said manager John McGuigan, "and nobody has to remind me about the Alamo." Oui, oui, cried Serge. (July 16, 1971) ...

ALL kinds of movie stars are attracted to the Kahala Hilton Hotel: Currently adorning the beach there is "Deep Throat" star Linda Lovelace herself, along with her 'mentor," Mike Traynor and Mr. & Mrs. Sammy Davis Jr. On the United flight over, Miss Lovelace won a bottle of champagne for guessing the halfway point most accurately. The foursome will be in town all this week. (July 17, 1973) ...

MAUI rock fans looking for vacationing Elton John may see him hanging around the Sheraton-Maui, but they won't find him registered under that name. (July 13, 1977) ... Joan Hayes, of Citizens Against Noise, pipes up with the report that Marshall McLuhan is the most memorable man she's met at any of Serrell Hillman's memorable parties. I think the reason she was impressed with McLuhan, however, is that he ALWAYS carries ear plugs with him. He says he's been doing it for years, even when walking, to block out traffic noise. (July 14, 1977) ...

"HAWAII Five-O" called Kee Allen, wife of Cashman Photo honcho Stan Allen, to play a lady of the evening in an upcoming episode. "I feel it only fair to tell you," Kee told them, "that I'm eight months pregnant." There followed a truly pregnant pause. "Maybe next time," she was told. (July 13, 1978) ...

WE love to criticize the U.S. Postal Service, but those folks are geniuses compared with the Italian postal people. Scotty Koga found that out when he addressed a postcard to Ray Milici that was clearly marked, "Honolulu, Hawaii, USA." So where did the Florence post office department send it? Why, the Bahamas, of course. Fortunately, it was forwarded from there ... Is Gardiner Jones a closet male chauvinist? Who else would make a prediction that Sandra Day O'Connor, should she be confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court as expected, turns out to be a broad constructionist? (July 13, 1981) ...

WHEN Caroline Kennedy weds Saturday, her best man will be brother John F. Kennedy Jr. It's been 20 years since Jackie and the children summered in Hawaii and John-John burned his bottom in a Mauna Kea bonfire. Wonder if he still has a scar? ... Honolulu Symphony conductor Donald Johanos and wife Corinne are in New York together with their son, Andy, a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, and their daughter, Jennifer, a young lady who's so talented that she designed the centerpieces for Caroline Kennedy's wedding party. (July 17, 1986) ...

WHEN magician Mike Ching was in Las Vegas recently, he stopped by the California Hotel because he was told he could get real saimin there. Ching says the place was so thick with local atmosphere that "we thought we'd walked into the Beretania Zippy's." (July 15, 1991) ... Current Miss Hawaii Carolyn Sapp has been a volunteer for Special Olympics for several years. Yesterday, she was able to help out again by joining a 5K "fun run" at the Blaisdell Bike Path in Pearl City. The event was sponsored by the Hawaii State Chiropractic Association as a benefit for Special Olympics. (July 15, 1991) ...
