Former TV regular
Ray Lovell does
Civil Defense radio spots

Question: What ever happened to KHON news reporter Ray Lovell, who had a regular segment featuring Hawaii?

Answer: Lovell is no longer a regular on the TV screen since he left Channel 2 in 1996, but his voice can be heard once a month on the radio.

The veteran broadcaster, who is the telecommunications planner for the state Civil Defense, is the announcer for the Civil Defense monthly tests.

Lovell also serves as chairman of the Hawaii Television and Film Development Board. He was appointed to the board by former Gov. Ben Cayetano. He also owns and operates Journeyman Productions, a freelance writing and video production company.

Lovell, who worked at Channel 2 for 23 years, moved to Oahu in 1970 from Kentucky. The Tennessee native said he dreamed of moving here since he was a child because of the rich culture and environment.

After studying journalism at the University of Kentucky, he worked as a broadcaster and reporter in Kentucky before coming to Hawaii as a broadcaster for KHVH radio. Three years later he moved to KHON, where he worked as a reporter, weekend anchor and assignment editor.

In 1984 he began "Ray Lovell's Journal," a weekly news segment focusing on Hawaii's people, culture and history. He resigned from the station in 1996.

"I was in my early 50s. I wanted to do other things," he said.

Lovell, who celebrated his 60th birthday in May, lives on Wilhelmina Rise with his wife, Karen, and two children, Mark and Melissa.
