Go on an ArtSpree

Museum having an open house

Tired of the same old self staring back at you every morning from the bathroom mirror? Need to get out of your rut? You could try a health club, a motivational class ... or butoh?

According to Lori Ohtani of Tangentz, an experimental butoh dance company performing tomorrow at The Contemporary Museum's ArtSpree 2003, the Japanese dance form possesses transformative power.

"Butoh is a deep art form that can affect someone to change, to push forward," she says. "In our training, we work from imagery. It requires performers to go to a deep place within themselves.

"Butoh helped me come out of my shell, to not be so intimidated," Ohtani testifies.

For those less intent on personal overhaul, Tangentz's performance at ArtSpree will offer live sax and cello music paired with dramatic costuming and performances.

"Those who have never seen butoh before will be able to see something unexpected," Ohtani says. "Hopefully, we'll make them want to see more."

Tangentz is one of a host of groups and performers taking the stage for The Contemporary Museum's annual community open house event. In addition to entertainment, the museum is offering art activities for the whole family, art and dance demonstrations, docent guides in the galleries and a special ArtSpree menu in The Contemporary Café by Hale 'Aina award-winning chef Noreen Lam. Events will also be held at the King Kalakaua Plaza in Waikiki.

The following is a schedule of the day's festivities.
