[UH FOOTBALL]

Tate’s status with
Warriors in question

Mark Tate's future with the Hawaii football team is up in the air entering fall camp.

UH receivers coach Ron Lee said he hasn't heard from Tate this summer. The receiver isn't on the team's roster heading into fall camp, which opens Aug. 5.

However, he added that Tate, who would be entering his junior season, was taking summer classes and could rejoin the team when the fall semester starts in late August.

"I haven't seen him," Lee said. "It's really up to him."

Tate (6-foot-1, 212 pounds) was an all-district selection as a member of the Hoover (San Diego) High football team and was expected to give the Warriors a combination of size and speed when he signed with the program after being recruited by schools such as Kansas State, Washington State and Wisconsin.

Tate hasn't caught a pass in his UH career. He redshirted as a freshman in 2000 and played in eight games in 2001. He returned eight kickoffs for 239 yards, including an 80-yard return against Tulsa.

While Tate's future with the Warriors is uncertain, the team is set to welcome Sean Stennis back into the fold.

Stennis, the nephew of former UH quarterback Mike Stennis, redshirted as a freshman last season and was set to transfer to a junior college after being suspended from the team in February. But Lee said Stennis is slated to be with the team when camp opens.

"Sean has a chance to be a good receiver and he's been working hard in the weight room," Lee said.
