Hawaii, BYUH to meet for first time in 21 years
The University of Hawaii and Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's basketball teams will meet for the first time in 21 years when the Rainbow Warriors host the Seasiders on Nov. 17 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The matchup will count as a regular-season contest for BYUH, an NCAA Division II program, but will be an exhibition game for Division I UH.
The teams last met on Dec. 11, 1982, with UH winning 81-67.
UH is one of five Division I teams on BYUH's schedule.
Hawaii surfers win national titles at Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, Calif. >> Ten Hawaii surfers won national champion honors at the United States Surfing Federation's U.S. Surfing Championship, held June 28-July 6 at Oceanside Pier.
Hawaii national champions are James Clancy, drop knee; Nathan Rubio, junior bodyboard; Miya Yamaoka, women bodyboard; Robert Martinez, menehune bodyboard; Joy Mangelssen, junior women longboard; Hizson Lin-Kee, menehune; Dave Riddle, legends; Kyle Raney, boys; Gia Fantany, girls; and Shane Valieri, open shortboard.
2 named girls wrestling prep All-Americans
Two Hawaii wrestlers have garnered first-team honors in the third annual TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team.
Caylene Valdez is Hawaii's first four-time girls state champion. Debbi Sakai will represent the United States at the Junior World Championships this summer in Turkey. Both girls have won "scholastic-style" national titles this year.
Hawaii had four third-team selections: Nicole Fonda and Elizabeth Torres of Kahuku, Danyelle Hedin of Kailua and Jasmine Norman of Kealakehe. Punahou's Naomi Karlen was an honorable mention All-American.
UH coaches' speed camp heads to Maui
The Hawaii Speed and Quickness Camp makes a Maui appearance this weekend.
UH football coaches Rich Miano (defensive backs) and Mel deLaura (strength and conditioning) conduct clinics Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku. Ages 8-12 will be instructed from 10 a.m. to noon and ages 13 and up have a 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. session. A $10 fee is payable at walk-up registration the day of the event. Also, there is a free coaches' clinic for all sports from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Baldwin High School gym.
Pegasus overtakes Pyewacket for Transpac lead
There was a cheer aboard Pegasus 77 yesterday when word came it had overtaken Pyewacket for the lead in the Division 1 section of the 42nd Transpacific Yacht Race.
Both boats were slowed by light winds. Pegasus had sailed only 265 miles in the previous 24 hours, but it was 31 miles more than Pyewacket, which headed out of the direct course in search of stronger breeze.
Beau Geste leads the Division 2 race. Illusion regained the race's overall lead on corrected handicap time.
Hawaii Pacific baseball signs pitcher, catcher
Two players from Arizona junior colleges have signed with the Hawaii Pacific University baseball program, the school announced yesterday.
Derek Roach, a 6-foot-2 pitcher from Phoenix College, and Bobby Rosthenhausler, a 5-foot-11 catcher from Cochise County Community College, signed national letters of intent with HPU.
UH's Murray wins Canadian Junior National
SASKATOON, Sask. >> Hawaii's Novelle Murray won the Canadian Junior National discus title last week with a toss of 46.79 meters, the third longest throw of her career.
Murray, competing for her club team, Kajack, is coming off a freshman season in which she was Western Athletic Conference champion. She will also compete in the Canadian Senior National Championships and the Western Canada Games this summer.
2 isle soccer players go to national camp
Stephen Carlson and David Gualdarama of the Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club were among 150 soccer players invited to participate in the Olympic Development Camp.
The national camp held at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington features players from 30 states. The program started Tuesday and runs through Sunday.
