RUSSELL SAMPLES "SUBSTANCE & SOUL": Russell Tanoue, left, and Michelle Kennedy, stopped by Indigo Saturday night to congratulate Laka, Ka'ai, and Bruno on the launching of "Substance & Soul," a new monthly event in the Opium Den. "S&S" features a blend of recordings and live music; Bruno played drums while DJ James presided on the "ones-and-twos" during the first hour of "S&S" last weekend. Tanoue is celebrating his birthday at the Ocean Club this Saturday -- the party goes public at 9 p.m.

GREAT EXPOSURE: Christopher Lawrence took control of the mixing board around 1:30 a.m. and worked until well past 4 Sunday morning at the Maze. Some of Lawrence's fans crowded around the DJ booth to watch him at work. Others danced to an epic live equivalent of his impressive recent mix album, "Exposure IV."

WELCOME HOME, JACK: Jack Johnson enjoyed some quiet time backstage before playing for a sold-out house at the Pipeline Cafe on Sunday. Johnson gave his enthusiastic fans all they could ask for in the perfect 90-minute concert, and the wall-to-wall crowd sang along most of the time. He closed the show with a solo three-song encore that ended with "On And On." Johnson and his wife, Kim, celebrated his return with a backstage party for family and high school friends in the VIP area overlooking the stage.
