Classification details to be discussed

Details of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's first-ever classified state tournaments will be up for discussion at meetings involving high school athletic administrators tomorrow at the Oahu Interscholastic Association office.

The HHSAA's football committee will meet in the morning to discuss the new Division II tournament. A meeting regarding the softball and girls basketball tournaments is set for the afternoon.

Tomorrow's meetings are expected to cover the logistics of the tournaments -- including the tournament formats, the process of placing teams into the two divisions, the qualification requirements and dates of the events.

Proposals to create two-class state tournaments in football, softball and girls basketball on a one-year trial basis were approved by the HHSAA's executive board last month after first being passed by the Hawaiian Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association. The tournaments are scheduled to be held in the upcoming school year.

The football tournament format passed by HIADA called for the current eight-team tournament, instituted in 1999, to remain intact while adding a four-team Division II tournament.

When it passed the football proposal, HIADA also passed a measure to classify a girls sport. Both softball and girls basketball eventually gained the approval of the HHSAA executive board.
