Airport shooter released
while awaiting sentence

The Kauai man who admitted to threatening an airport security officer and firing two gunshots inside Lihue Airport was released yesterday pending his November sentencing.

U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway gave approval for the release of Lloyd Albinio, 24, of Kapaa, despite Assistant U.S. Attorney Wes Porter's argument that Albinio is potentially dangerous. "There's almost a selfish focus here on what is better for Mr. Albinio," Porter said. "The risk is just far too great for the community."

Albinio will remain under house arrest, his family must post a $50,000 bond and his antipsychotic medication must be controlled. Peter Wolff, Albinio's public defender, said his client is not a threat as long as he takes that medication.

Mollway granted Porter's request that Albinio's possible return to work requires approval from pretrial services officials, not just mental health professionals. The judge ordered that any firearms and prescription medications possessed by Albinio's mother and stepfather must be secured.

Albinio pleaded guilty last month to firing shots May 8 that led to the closure of the airport and forced the evacuation of about 200 people.
