Harris funding inquiry leads to another arrest

The city prosecutor's investigation into Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris' political campaign has netted another arrest.

Honolulu police yesterday booked Hawaii Kai resident Sam Hyun on suspicion of money laundering, making a false-name campaign donation and illegal ownership of a business.

The 43-year-old Hyun, an engineer with W.A. Hirai & Associates, was not charged and was released pending investigation.

State Campaign Spending Commission records show that Hyun gave $3,000 to the Harris campaign in 1999.

Last week, police arrested five local residents as part of its investigation into the Harris campaign. The suspects included two executives with city contractors R.M. Towill Corp. and Edward K. Noda & Associates Inc.

Traveling pets may face shorter quarantine

Having shortened quarantine times for mainland pets moving to Hawaii, the state now is looking to shorten the wait time for Hawaii pets making round-trips out of state.

Yesterday the state Board of Agriculture proposed quarantine rule changes that would reduce to 14 days a now-120-day waiting period after a Hawaii pet complies with other requirements, said James Foppoli, state veterinarian.

To qualify for the proposed shorter waiting period, a Hawaii pet must have had two vaccinations (no closer than 90 days apart), a blood test that confirms the vaccines worked and an implanted microchip for identification, Foppoli said.
