Celebrate the musubi

Saturday is the day of the musubi at the Wabi-Sabi gift shop in Kaimuki.

The store is seeking entries in its annual musubi-decorating contest. Adults may enter in the categories of Traditional (triangular shape) and Rice Sculpture. Children may enter any form they like, but all entries must include nori.

Drop off entries from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the store, 1223 Koko Head Ave., No. 4. Judging will be at 10 a.m., with public viewing until 2 p.m.

The day's events will also include a tasting of 'local stinky food" and book signing Joan Namkoong, author of "Go Home Cook Rice."

Taste summer flavors

Chef Brook Tadena of the Hanohano Room teaches a cooking class, "Summer Flavors of Hawaii," 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Niihau Room of the Sheraton-Waikiki.

The session includes a how-to, a tasting of the dishes and recipes. Tadena's menu: Vine-Ripe Waialua Tomato Salad, Sautéed Ehu with Bouillabaisse Sauce and Hanohano Shaved Ice.

"Summer Flavors" is part of the Sheraton's "On the Front Burner" series featuring the resorts' chefs. The series concludes Sept. 27 with "Holiday Secret Recipes."

Cost for either class is $50 per person, or $75 for two. call 931-8408.

HPU plans bake sale

Hawaii Pacific University is hosting a bake sale, 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in the lobby of its 1132 Bishop St. building. Cookies, cupcakes, muffins, breads, candies and other items will be sold to benefit the Aloha United Way.

Onion recipes wanted

The Maui Onion Festival is accepting entries for this year's recipe contest, to be judged at Whalers Village on Maui.

Professional and amateur cooks are invited to submit recipes using Maui onions, in the categories of entree, pupu, soup or salad.

Winners will receive gift certificates for Whalers Village, with a top prize of $100

Finalists must be able to present their dishes at the event.

Baking basics

Kapiolani Community College pastry arts instructor Dan Wetter leads a four-week series of evening baking classes beginning July 30.

All sessions run from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays in the bakeshop. Cost is $75 per class; registration runs three weeks in advance. Call 734-9211.
