IN HAWAII
Wallace shuts theater at Enchanted Lake

Wallace Theaters, citing low attendance, said it will close its three-auditorium Enchanted Lake Cinema complex after the last show tomorrow.

Wallace said its flat-floor complex in the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center could not compete with stadium-seating theaters. The complex employs 12, some of whom will be relocated to other Wallace properties, the company said.

Wallace is keeping its nearby four-screen Keolu Center Cinemas, said a company spokesman, David Lyons. And Lyons said its two-screen Kailua Cinemas is drawing larger audiences since Wallace dropped ticket prices there to as little as 50 cents.

Waikiki occupancy fell in May

Hospitality Advisors LLC said Waikiki hotel occupancy fell 10 percent in May to 61.2 percent from 68 percent last year, while occupancy rose on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

Maui occupancy rose to 72.4 percent from 67.6 percent, Big Island occupancy increased to 55 percent from 53.6 percent, and Garden Isle occupancy moved to 76.7 percent from 70.1 percent.

Waikiki hotels were hurt by a decline in Japanese visitors, while neighbor island hotels were held by improvement in business travel.

IN JAPAN
JAL international traffic drops

TOKYO >> Japan Airlines System Corp. said yesterday the number of passengers on its international flights dropped 52.1 percent in May from a year earlier to some 560,000.

Company officials said the decline was due mainly to the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome.

But they also said the recent falls might have hit bottom in May, as the number likely dropped some 40 percent in June from a year earlier.
