Jury in fatal shooting convicts homeless man
A Hawaii jury took about an hour yesterday to convict a former New York man of second-degree murder.
Prosecutors said Anibal Ortiz, 26, shot Odin Ortiz (no relation), 37, in the left eye at Ala Wai Community Park on Dec. 28. Both men were homeless at the time.
Anibal Ortiz's attorney said his client was about a mile away at a friend's house when the shooting took place.
But Deputy Prosecutor Franklin Pacarro Jr. said bullet fragments from Odin Ortiz's body matched with Anibal Ortiz's gun.
Also, witnesses testified that Anibal Ortiz was the only one standing next to Odin Ortiz after he was shot, Pacarro said.
Both men were said to have been arguing about whether the victim had been disturbing Anibal Ortiz's possessions.
Anibal Ortiz faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Police contend arrest solves car break-ins
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park rangers believe they may have solved a recent rash of car break-ins along Chain of Craters Road with the arrest of a man who was allegedly caught breaking into a van.
Robert Souza Jr. was charged in federal court yesterday for allegedly breaking into a white van at the park on Saturday.
Prior to Souza's arrest, park rangers had been investigating about 20 vehicle break-ins that started soon after June 15.
According to a federal affidavit, rangers observed Souza break into the van parked along Chain of Craters Road at about 4:30 a.m. and saw him remove two bags from the vehicle.
Rangers said they detained Souza, who then admitted to breaking into two other vehicles on park property during separate occasions, according to the affidavit.
