New CD is more
‘dance’ than ‘Latin’

"Nueva Musica"
The Latin Project
Electric Monkey Records

British musicians Jez Colin and Matt Cooper have put together a new album under the aegis of the Latin Project, fueled by the English club success of 2001's "En Fuego," which is included on the album. It's a garage-inspired track, with bits of an ululating female vocal loop and flamenco-styled guitar.

It's not much on texture, but it sounds like Colin and Cooper took the time to try adding more Cuban, Brazilian and Latin elements to their dance beats since then, and, for the most part, they've succeeded. But I suspect, however, that dance music fans will take to this music a lot more than Latin fans.

That's because the elements of the more natural swing of Cuban, Brazilian and Latin music -- the horns, percussion and montuno-style piano playing -- are used more as coloration on the tunes by the Latin Project. The success of songs like "Universal," "Brazilian Love Affair" and "Clouds" are due to how Colin and Cooper drop in and take out those elements in the course of those dance tracks.

Besides fellow Project members Junno Homrich and Katia Moraes (a Brazilian singer who adds a nice, bilingual vocal to the celebratory "Brazilian Love Affair"), guests on "Nueva Musica" include Latin vocalists/percussionists Freddie Crespo and Joël Virgel, and one Sananda Maitreya, who was known as Terence Trent D'Arby during his brief spate of hits in the late '80s, before taking on this new Buddhist-inspired name.

"Nueva Musica," overall, is an interesting spin on contemporary dance music.
