Norwegian begins local recruiting

Norwegian Cruise Line, looking to hire 3,000 people to work the ships in its expanding Hawaii service, wants to get as many of them as it can from Hawaii.

The company will hold a recruiting job fair tomorrow and Thursday at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort.

The sign-up opportunities, running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, relate to jobs on two vessels, the new 2,146-passenger Pride of America, being finished in Germany, and the 2,002-passenger Pride of Aloha, changing its name from Norwegian Sky. Both ships begin Hawaii service next year.

Under congressional exemptions allowing the ships to ply between American ports, they must hire American crews. Operating its Hawaii division under a new name, NCL America, the company said it expects its total program to generate more than 10,000 jobs for Hawaii residents.

NCL said it is looking for entry-level crew members, as well as managers, workers in the food, beverage and hospitality services, entertainers and medical staff. NCL America job fairs will take place on the neighbor islands soon, the company said.
