Pyewacket a mile ahead in race to Hawaii

LOS ANGELES >> Roy E. Disney's Pyewacket led Philippe Kahn's Pegasus 77 past the west end of Santa Catalina Island and into open ocean as the 42nd Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii unfolded yesterday.

"We're about a mile ahead of Pegasus, which is dead astern," said Peter Isler, Pyewacket's navigator. "I can't see anybody else right now in the haze."

The two lead boats passed the island 23 miles off the Pacific Coast a bit more than 2 1/2 hours after the start.

Meanwhile, two smaller boats that started Friday dropped out. Lucky Dog, being sailed doublehanded by Peter Putnam and Len Bose of Newport Beach, Calif., returned to its home port at noon yesterday because of a leak in the steering column of its rudder.

The Cone of Silence, a Super 30 from Australia and the smallest boat in the race at 31 feet, withdrew reporting "structural damage." Skipper James Neill said he did not require assistance.

Tudor wins world longboard contest

CAPARICA, Portugal >> Former world champion Joel Tudor came from the qualifying first round to win the Caparica Surf Classic 2003, the second stop of the world longboard tour, yesterday.

The North American had to enter in the contest's first round because he took a one-year break from surfing, and couldn't be seeded from last year's ratings.

Tudor had the contest's best wave (nine of 10 possible points), as well as the largest total in the final (16.90 of 20 possible), thanks to a drop-knee bottom turn, followed by a long hang-five, passing to a hang-10 and finishing with a re-entry almost on the sand.

Hawaii's Bonga Perkins finished third.
