Ehime Maru returns home to Uwajima port

MATSUYAMA, Japan >> The new Ehime Maru, built to replace the fisheries training ship of the same name that sank after being rammed by a U.S. submarine in 2001, returned home today after a two-month voyage which included a port call in Honolulu.

The 499-ton ship arrived at its home port of Uwajima in Ehime prefecture. The ship left May 7 for the training voyage, with 14 Uwajima Fisheries High School students, two teachers and 20 crew members.

The Ehime Maru stopped at Honolulu for refueling June 18 and stayed for four days. In Hawaii they visited the Ehime Maru monument at Kakaako Waterfront Park and met local high school students who have been taking care of the monument.

The old Ehime Maru sank Feb. 9, 2001, off Oahu after being struck by the nuclear-powered submarine USS Greeneville, which had been demonstrating a rapid-surfacing drill. Four students, two of their teachers and three crew members died in the accident, while 26 others were rescued.

Police arrested three suspects Saturday after a shooting in Wahiawa on Friday.

About 8 p.m. Friday, a 32-year-old man was standing outside his doorway when he was confronted by four people -- two men and two women -- who were looking for their friend, according to police.

Police said the suspects allegedly assaulted the victim, forced their way into his home and left after they could not find the person they were looking for.

A short time later, the victim left his residence and was again confronted by one of the male suspects.

After an argument the suspect shot the victim in his left side, police said.

Police said the 32-year-old man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

The shooting suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police arrested two others on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
