DHT leads list
of Po‘okela nominees

Diamond Head Theatre is the front-runner with 28 nominations, and Manoa Valley Theatre a close second with 26, as Hawaii's theater community counts down the final two weeks until the 20th annual Po'okela Banquet & Awards Ceremony.

Front-runner DHT's 28 Po'okela nominations include nine for its blockbuster fall production of "Chicago," eight for "Follies" and five for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Manoa Valley Theatre's colorful staging of "Honk!" accounts for eight of MVT's 26 nominations including "Leading Male in a Musical" nominations for Michael Hanuna and Kevin Y. Yamada, with the rest spread out among "The Cripple of Inishmaan," "Visiting Mr. Green," "Beehive" and "(proof)."

Nine other local theater companies received nominations in at least one category.

Two of Hawaii's major local theater groups, Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Kumu Kahua, still chose to opt out of Po'okela adjudication. This left adjudicators with little to chose from in the "Original Script" category; every original script staged by the participating theater groups has received a nomination.

The Po'okela Awards are presented each year by the Hawaii State Theatre Council. Adjudicators may also present up to two awards for achievements that don't fit any of the established categories, and the HSTC Board of Directors bestows a Pierre Bowman Award for lifetime achievement. This year's recipient is Richard Aadland.

Entertainment at the Po'okela traditionally features selections from the nominees in the Overall Musical category. If that tradition is observed this year, the audience will get to hear a piece from "Quarantine," an imaginative "rock opera thriller" written and composed by Sandra Brace and David A. Watkins which was staged last fall on the Big Island, as well as songs from "Chicago," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Follies" and "Honk!" the other four finalists.
