THE FRANK B. SHANER
FALSETTO CONTEST
Aloha, Aunty!: Bill Wynne, left, and Gary Medeiros paid their respects to Genoa Keawe during the Aloha Festivals Ninth Annual Frank B. Shaner Hawaiian KINE Falsetto Contest at the Hawaii Theatre on Saturday. Wynne, who came from New Jersey to compete, was an audience favorite but didn't place. Medeiros won last year singing "Alika," Keawe's signature song.

Three judges: Mike Kelly, left, Neva Rego and Tony Conjugacion shared judging duties with Kahauanu Lake, Noelani Mahoe, Flip McDiarmid and Leina'ala Haile. A short set by Richard Ho'opi'i and Pa'ahana, a guest spot by Gary Medeiros and an impromptu rendition of "Alika" by Genoa Keawe made it a great show over and above the 10 contestants' performances.

Meet the winners: Imipono Cabrinha, left, who took top honors singing "Ku'u Lei Hoku," was congratulated backstage by Frank B. Shaner, Windsor Alapa'i and Charles P.K. Gouveia. Alapa'i came in second with a rendition of "Hoehoe Na Wa'a" that included an account of the lyrics' meaning. Gouveia showed good comic skills before singing "Pua Ilililehua."
