Firefighters responded yesterday to a fire in the Kalihi Stream bed near Likelike Highway and Gulick Avenue in Kalihi. Hannielyn Ber, left, Zyra Layaoen and Essen Pacpaco ran away from the smoke in the area. Neighbors said the fire was started by fireworks thrown off the bridge.

Men's argument leads to shooting in Wahiawa

A fight between two men in Wahiawa escalated into a shooting Friday night, police said.

The two men were arguing on the corner of Ohai Street and Ohai Place about 8 p.m. when the suspect allegedly shot the victim, police said.

The 32-year-old victim was taken by helicopter to the Queen's Medical Center. His condition was not available. The 28-year-old suspect was arrested for attempted murder.

Kamehameha closed after car downs pole

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions for several hours in Waikane yesterday after a car hit a utility pole about 6:19 p.m.

The pole blocked both lanes of the highway near Johnson Road by Coral Kingdom, according to police. The highway was reopened at 8:50 p.m. after the pole was cleared.

A passenger in the car was taken to Castle Medical Center in stable condition, but the driver was not seriously injured, police said.

Suspect is sought in stabbing and beating

Police are searching for a suspect who stabbed an Aiea man after he and three other men beat him with clubs Friday night.

Police said the victim was at a party at 99-200 Ulune St. in Halawa Heights about 6:10 p.m. when four men in a green Jeep Cherokee pulled up, confronted the victim and beat him.

The victim was stabbed once in the back and is in good condition, police said. All four men fled in the Jeep.

The suspect is described as an 18- to 20-year-old man who weighs about 140 pounds and has a thin build, brown complexion, long black hair and brown eyes.

Lost hikers rescued after night in forest

Big Island firefighters rescued a woman and a young boy yesterday who spent the night in the forest after straying from the trail Friday night.

The 26-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy separated from their group while hiking on the Puu O Umi Trail off Kohala Mountain Road, the Fire Department said. They were last seen at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Two helicopters and ground units searched until dark for the pair.

Rescuers found foot tracks off the trail and heard faint calls in the darkness but did not locate the pair until yesterday at 12:43 p.m.

The pair were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital and were in good condition, according to fire officials.
