Moiliili park design
completed and waiting
for city approval

Question: What ever happened to a proposal to build a park at Kalo Place in Moiliili?

Answer: The design has been completed for Kalo Place Park, located on the 1-acre parcel at the end of Kalo Place, which is behind Puck's Alley.

The plan is subject to city approval. City spokeswoman Carol Costa said the city plans to put the project out for bids this year.

The long-awaited park will be situated amid houses, three high-rises and a cluster of walk-up apartment buildings housing mostly low-income and elderly residents.

The park will include a concrete walkway to allow park users to stroll through the grassy area shaded by Hong Kong orchid, monkeypod and shower trees.

It will have picnic tables but no playground equipment or restrooms, said Ron Lockwood, who has championed the project.

Still, the park will offer a safe playground for the many children in the neighborhood and a "little piece of green" for the adults, Lockwood said.

"Senior citizens wanted it to just come and sit in the daytime, kids wanted it to just run around and parents want to bring their hibachis and cook some dinner," Lockwood said. "Just to get away from the four walls."

Lockwood said the idea for a park was started about five years ago. The neighborhood board and vision team members collected between 800 and 900 signatures from the district to petition for a park.
