Woman found in hotel
was dead for nearly
2 weeks, report says

Authorities said a 31-year-old woman whose body was found in a Waikiki hotel last month had been dead for up to two weeks, according to documents submitted in federal court.

The Honolulu medical examiner has yet to positively identify the woman or the cause of death.

Her body was found after her husband apparently jumped from the 4th floor of the hotel, police said.

The 32-year-old man was taken to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He has recovered and is now in federal custody for allegedly violating terms of his supervised release for drug and money-laundering convictions in 1998.

Police said the man has refused to talk to them. However, he told federal probation officers that he does not remember his attempted suicide or his wife's death, according to court documents.

When police responded to what they later classified as an attempted suicide at 2303 Ala Wai Blvd. on May 26, they found the man lying on the ground at the rear of the Holiday Surf Hotel. A chain-link fence apparently broke his fall.

According to court documents, when police went to the man's hotel room, they noticed a strong, foul odor. The woman's body was lying on the couch. It was tightly wrapped in bedsheets and comforters, and covered with large pillows and brown plastic shopping bags filled with clothing.

Police said they also found the couple's 1-month-old son sleeping in the hotel room and a suicide note, apparently written by the man. They turned the boy over to the state Child Protective Services.

Police believe the woman died on or about May 11, when the man canceled maid service and refused all calls to the room. A manager at the hotel said the man moved into the hotel in March and had worked at the hotel as a desk clerk. Police learned that the man was fired.

A hearing on the government's request to revoke the man's release last Friday was postponed because the man's lawyer wants his client to undergo a mental examination.

In 1998, he was sentenced to two consecutive 70-month prison terms after he pleaded guilty to taking part in an operation that paid people to transport methamphetamine from California to Hawaii. He was released from prison June 11, 2002.
